Admin/Biographical History Stephen L. Joyner was born in Nashville, N.C. in 1943. After attending Nashville High School, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. In 1964 he was accepted into the Duke University Physician Assistant Program and graduated in 1968. Joyner entered family practice in 1969 in Ayden, N.C. and became part of the first physician assistant and single MD team. In 1982 he became administrative director of the East Carolina University Transplant and Organ Procurement Program, and was instrumental in establishing the Carolina Organ Procurement Agency, now known as Carolina Donor Services. In 1989 he opened and co-owned Greenville
Health Care Center, from which he retired in 2002.

Joyner is a founding member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) and served as a Board of Director member. He served on the North Carolina Association of Physician Assistants (NCAPA) and was on the Executive Committee as Vice President. In 1982 Steve Joyner was named an honorary Director by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) in recognition of his contributions to the formation and development of the NCCPA. During his career, Joyner has made numerous presentations and published several articles on the physician assistant concept.
