Reginald Carter, PhD, PA, became associate program director of Duke University's PA program in 1972. From 1984 to 1999, Dr. Carter served as Chief of the Division for PA Education within the Department of Community and Family Medicine at Duke University Medical Center. In 2001, Dr. Carter stepped down as program director to assume responsibility for the PA program's alumni affairs office and to found the Office of Physician Assistant History. In 2002, with Dr. J. Don Pedersen was faculty with the University of Utah PA program from 1979 and then became program director from 1989-2010. The bulk of the collection is made of materials that were passed on to Pedersen from William Wilson who co-founded the Utah PA program and was director for it in its early years.
