Summary Despite the growing visibility of nurse practitioners and physician assistants, most estimates of provider shortage have focused on physicians. In this study, the authors describe the contribution to generalist care made by nurse practitioners and physician assistants in Washington State, with special attention paid to their role in underserved rural areas.
