Admin/Biographical History |
Students have always played an active role in the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA). They were among the first to organize and share information with their peers. The original Board of Directors of the APAP included 16 graduate and 4 student PAs. By 1972, graduates began to outnumber students in the organization and J. Jeffery Heinrich, a Duke University PA student, was appointed the first president of the Student Academy of the American Academy of Physician Assistants. Mr. Heinrich sent each PA program a letter requesting that their students form their own institutional societies and select a national representative to stay in touch with him. The student national representatives were to meet during the annual AAPA meetings, discuss issues and elect one of the representatives to serve on the AAPA's Board of Directors the following year. In 1978, the Student Academy adopted a constitution. Over time, the Student Academy of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (SAAAPA) has developed its own structure within the AAPA. The Student Academy does not have individual members, as the student members join AAPA; instead SAAAPA's members consist of the registered student society at each accredited PA program. Each PA Program's student society is represented in the Assembly of Representatives (AOR), the SAAAPA's legislative and policymaking body. The students have their own Board of Directors, elect one person each year to serve on the AAPA's Board of Directors and appoint student delegates to represent their interest in the AAPA's House of Delegates (HOD). |
