Contains the papers of J. Jeffery Heinrich who was appointed by the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) Board of Directors to be the Academy’s historian in 1992 and who became the first elected president of the Society for the Preservation of Physician Assistant History in 2002. J. Jeffery Heinrich was also the first president of SAAAPA in 1972. Types of materials include legal documents, correspondence, newsletters, minutes of early AAPA board meetings, transcripts of oral history interviews, reports and brochures. A native of Burlington, Vermont, J. Jeffrey Heinrich served as a hospital corpsman with the United States Marines in Vietnam, where he received a purple heart. After service, he attended and graduated from Castleton State College in Vermont. He taught middle-school students for a year prior to entering and graduating from the Duke University Physician Assistant Program in 1973. Clinically, Heinrich worked as a physician assistant in the division of plastic surgery at the Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut for 25 years. Academically, he taught and evaluated the clinical skills of Yale University physician assistant students and served as co-director of the Yale University division of the Norwalk Hospital/Yale University School of Medicine PA Surgical Residency Program for 22 years. In the interim, he managed to take graduate courses earning a masters degree in adult education from Southern Connecticut State University in 1985 and a doctoral degree from Nova University in 1990. His involvement in local, regional and national professional organizations began early. He was the first national Student Academy President and served on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Physician Assistants. Later he became treasurer of the American Academy of Physician Assistants. He has served as President of the Connecticut Academy of Physician Assistants, President of the Physician Assistant Foundation of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, President of the Connecticut Physician Assistant Foundation and was the first elected President of the Society for the Preservation of Physician Assistant History. In addition, he has served as an at-large Member on the Board of Trustees of the American Burn Association. Dr. Heinrich joined the faculty of George Washington University, Washington, DC in 2000 serving as the director of the GWU physician assistant program until his retirement in 2008. As a scholar, he has co-authored more than 50 publications and received numerous awards for his professional accomplishment from the American Academy of Physician Assistants, the Duke University PA Program, the Connecticut Burn Care Foundation, the American Burn Association, the Association of Post-Graduate Physician Assistant Programs, the Connecticut Academy of Physician Assistants and the Veterans Caucus of the American Academy of Physician Assistants. |
