Originally drawn to the ministry of the Unitarian Universalist Church, Eric Schuman became interested in medicine while working at a free clinic in Freeport, Illinois. He then went on graduate from Long Island University's PA program in 1975. He has practiced in Mississippi, Kansas, and Oregon in a variety of specialties including Infectious Disease, HIV/AIDS, Headache, and primary care. He also has served on JAAPA's editorial board. During his interview, Mr. Schuman shares his experiences as an early PA, memorable moments in his practice, his work as editor of JAAPA, and his numerous awards and recognitions. He also tells about his fascinating altruistic work as a non-profit photographer and participating in animal assisted therapy programs. He ends the interview with timeless advice for those interested in the PA profession and current PA students. Originally drawn to the ministry of the Unitarian Universalist Church, Eric Schuman became interested in medicine while working at a free clinic in Freeport, Illinois. He then went on graduate from Long Island University's PA program in 1975. He has practiced in Mississippi, Kansas, and Oregon in a variety of specialties including Infectious Disease, HIV/AIDS, Headache, and primary care. He has served on JAAPA's editorial board for six years, and several more years on AAPA's Conference Education Program Committee. He has been awarded PA of the Year by the Oregon Society of Physician Assistants (2006), Northwest [Kaiser] Permanente's Excellence in Teaching Award (2009), the Oregon Medical Society's President's Achievement Award (2014). He was the first non-physician to be hired as faculty for the American Headache Society and he was the first PA in the United States to serve on the Board of Directors of a medical society (the Marion Polk County, Oregon Medical Society, 2011). He has written over 100 articles in medical literature and continues to teach CME classes at yearly AAPA conferences. He volunteers at Salem Free Clinics and in animal assisted therapy programs. |
