A senior thesis. "The purpose of this project is not only to gain insight into the conceptualization of the MEDEX Northwest Demonstration Program in Washington state, but to place its development and implementation - and to some extent that of all PA programs - within an historical framework, and to show that its success owed to local needs, as well as national factors. I aim to demonstrate that the MEDEX Demonstration Program may not have been as easily accepted without a local, as well as national need to extend the delivery of health care (the health manpower crisis), the precedent of such a way to extend physicians (the Duke University Physician Assistant Program), the availability of a proficient manpower pool (ex-corpsmen), and the creation of a receptive medical, social and political framework in the state of Washington by the program's proponents." |
