Summary |
The study area is Western Area comprising two districts (Western Area Rural and Urban) both of which are characterized by over population, administrative and commercial activities with more Community Health Officers (CHO) and Peripheral Health Units(PHUs) than any other part of Sierra Leone.. The Community Health Officers are a strong component of the Health Workforce in Sierra Leone but lack the required motivations for their contributions and excellence in the nationwide health service delivery. The study focuses more on quantitative approach used to achieve the purpose of the study. Questionnaires and observation were used to collect the primary data from 106 respondents. The result of analysis shows that majority (69%) of Community Health Officers are working at Peripheral Health Units regardless of existing poor motivational factors associated with government employment. However, this study has also shown that a cross section of Community Health Officers is working in diverse capacities as stated by 9% of them in administrative and management roles while 2% are Monitoring Evaluation and Learning (MEL) staff with 20% of them in different other roles. Overall, 79% of Community Health Officers deliver both diagnostic and management services whilst 78.3% deliver diverse competencies with 60% that consult all categories of patients depicting high importance of their presence across those two districts. The researcher's study shows that generally, 81% 0f CHOs have good management and leadership skills which could have been responsible for the demonstration of team work and respect for others' roles in the Primary Care Units where majority of them are assigned as In-Charges. According to the finding, 58% of Community Health Officers have acquired multiple core competencies and skills coupled with an overall 96% that regularly demonstrate good management and leadership skills that can be attributed to their excellent ability to manage conflict at their workplaces irrespective of existing demotivating factors identified by other studies. However, the motivation of Community Health Officers has a significant possibility of high positive health outcome through high quality of care in their service delivery at all levels of the health sector as they are already consulting the highest number of patients and apparently all categories of patients A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES, SCHOOL OF COMMUNITY HEALTH SCIENCES, NJALA UNIVERSITY FOR THE AWARD OF MASTERS OF PUBIC HEALTH (MPH) |
