Summary |
Preface: "The purpose of this report is to discuss the development, problems and progress of the nine MEDEX programs now training assistants to the primary care physician in this country. The report has been compiled under the auspices of the Council of MEDEX Programs, a national association of MEDEX training centers concerned with furthering and refining the unique MEDEX approach to the education and placement of physician's assistants within the primary care delivery system. Members of the Council include MEDEX California, Charles Drew Postgraduate Medical School; MEDEX Howard, Howard University College of Medicine; MEDEX New England, Dartmouth Medical School; MEDEX North Central, University of North Dakota School of Medicine; MEDEX Northwest, University of Washington School of Medicine; MEDEX Pacific, University of Hawaii School of Medicine; MEDEX Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine; MEDEX South Carolina, Medical University of South Carolina; and MEDEX Intermountain, University of Utah College of Medicine. The report is organized as an attempt to address three major questions: (1) What is the MEDEX approach and how does it differ from other physician's assistant training models; (2) How have Medex distributed themselves among communities and practice units requiring additional health manpower resources; and (3) What has been the impact of Medex on the actual delivery of health care services? Each of the foregoing questions is the basis for a chapter in the presentation which follows. |
